Wood Shingles and Shakes
Wood shingles and shakes are traditionally and most commonly made from old-growth western red cedar. Although the embodied energy of this product is quite low, the harvesting of western red cedar is, in most cases, unsustainable. If a wood shingle roof is desired, using certified eastern white cedar shingles, commonly used as wall siding, is an option. Some recycled-plastic shingles are manufactured to look like wood shingles.
